Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a Nigerian instrumentalist, bandleader, composer and political activist.
Fela was well known for his outspoken compositions on social issues criticizing the then Nigeria’s military dictatorship led by the Nigerian Armed Forces although unpopular with the the ruling Government.
Fela’s music was popular among the Nigerian public and Africans in general.
He made the decision to sing in Pidgin English so that his music could be enjoyed by individuals all over Africa, where the local languages spoken are very diverse and numerous.
Aside his music,Fela was also popular for being a ”ladies man’‘ and had married 28 wives.
n 1977, Fela released the popular album ”Zombie” a mockery of the Nigerian soldiers at that time.
The album hadn’t Gone down with the Government ,Fela had been severely beaten, and his elderly mother was thrown from a window, causing fatal injuries.
On 3 August 1997 died from complications related to AIDS.
Till date Fela’s music still resonates among Nigerians and some of the current social issues.
He would have been 82 today.
